On the death of Alof de Wignacourt the supreme dignity was entrusted to the Portuguese octogenarian Knight Luis Mendez de Vasconcellos on the 17th September 1622. Then Bailiff of Acre. This Knight had greatly distinguished himself in several naval expeditions against the Turks, and his dauntless bravery had won for him the admiration of the fraternity. The prudence and skill which he manifested in several important missions for which he had been selected by his late chief greatly contributed to his election.
He survived his new honours only six months, and no events of importance are known to have taken place during his short rule. He died on the 7th March 1623.
